Celebrating our 175 Anniversary in 2024
Barbers are celebrating their 175 Year Anniversary in 2024 and hosted a celebration at Hawkstone Park Hotel for all the teams to commemorate this wonderful event. The word associated with this momentous achievement is “demisemiseptcentennial” and not a word you will see often associated to businesses.
When John Barber formed the Company in 1848, he couldn’t possibly begin to imagine the changes to our industry from the first auction he held in The Black Horse Inn at Oakengates. Selling land and property and then branching out into the sale of household goods, machinery and then livestock we hope that he is proud of what the business he started has become today.
There is a book written about Barbers History and one of the final paragraphs refers to the closure in 1989 of the original Smithfield Market he opened in 1868 - it asks what he would have thought about the sound of livestock being replaced by the sound of supermarket tills and the thought is that he would have banged his gavel, made the same economical decision and move on with the next Lot! So we shall keep banging our gavels and keep moving with the times.
We look forward to carrying on the celebrations this year and shall continue to provide the professional, local and knowledgable service to all our customers in Shropshire and beyond.
